About & editorial policy

Marginalia is a free web directory assembled on newsroom principles. We assign every listed site to one of 22 editorial desks — named beats like the Finance & Markets Wire, the Health & Wellness Desk, or the Travel & Leisure Dispatch. Each desk has a brief, and every site in it was filed because it fit that brief. The directory currently holds 835 approved entries. Entries come from site owners who submit through our open submission form, and from our editors who file sites discovered in the course of maintaining the directory. Every submission goes through a brief review before being assigned to a desk. Marginalia does not rank its listings by traffic, revenue, or any paid arrangement. The order within each desk is chronological by date of entry. We believe a flat, unranked list is more honest than one shaped by metrics we cannot fully verify. The project is operated by a small team. We keep the directory free to browse and free to submit to. If you run or know of a site that belongs in one of our desks, the submission form is open. Editors review new entries and file them to the appropriate desk on a rolling basis. If you have a correction or question about a listing, use the contact details on the About page. We aim to keep the docket accurate.
